komono.

In Marie Kondo’s method, komono, is an umbrella term for the miscellaneous categories that do not fall into the larger categories of Clothing, Books, Paper or Sentimental.

Take some time to identify which sub-categories you have in your home before diving in. This list of common komono sub-categories can help you get started--just make sure to add or subtract from this list based on what you actually own.

tips.

  • When tackling komono, it can be helpful to start with the sub-categories that are already grouped together, or are easy for you to make decisions on.

  • As you move on to sub-categories that are not grouped together, take a moment to gather items from around the house and sort them before "joy checking."

  • Decor is a good sub-category to save for the end, when the majority of clutter has left your home and spaces have opened up for decorating.

  • Pay attention to whether an item may be sentimental and would better be reviewed as part of the final, sentimental category.
